Adware and Malware Scams
These have become increasingly rampant in recent times. This is especially for people who use the internet a lot. Malware and adware are minor computer programs that roam the internet trying to infect computers. Malware can, for example, be downloaded along with seemingly harmless files such as a celebrity picture. They can also be downloaded as programs from websites either knowingly or unknowingly.
Hackers may send you email attachment containing viruses or even create worms that infect computers. Macro viruses are documents containing malware. Viruses can do many things including secretly monitoring your computer and stealing passwords and other sensitive private information. They may also give a scammer control of your computer.
Spyware, Ransomware, and Scareware
You probably have seen an advertisement that pops on your computer. Clicking on some of these may install viruses that secretly browse your computer and web browser for private information. These are spyware infections. Other viruses may take control of files on your computer, and later the scammer asks for money to release the data. These are ransomware viruses. Scareware are rogue software that give you false reports about your computer security and safety updates. It then tricks you into downloading viruses into your computer.
Some scammers set up fake Wi-Fi networks in public places and steal personal data from anyone who logs into the network.
Going by the above, it is apparent that there is a need to secure your devices from unauthorized access by scammers. Getting a reputable antivirus software is recommended. Nonetheless, if your computer is infected always consult a professional to have it cleaned.
